Resin 3D printing has come a long way since my initial foray into this technology back in 2020. One of the most fascinating aspects of this journey is witnessing the evolution of resin printers. From the inefficient RGB LCDs of the past to the current trend of monochrome LCDs, we've seen a significant improvement in efficiency and lifespan. Unfortunately, these DLP printers seem to have taken a backseat, leaving mono LCDs as the primary technology for consumer SLA printing.

While DLP offers superior precision, the mono LCDs have made significant strides in terms of optics and light sources, providing a more than adequate printing experience. The real question, in my opinion, is whether the higher resolutions offered by new printers are truly necessary, especially when considering the impressive fine details achievable with older models.

One of the most significant changes I've noticed is the focus on user-friendliness. Modern resin printers have addressed many of the pain points that plagued earlier models. Easier bed levelling, improved air filtration to prevent resin smells from escaping, heated resin vats for consistent results, and UV-blocking lids that can be flipped open with ease - these are all features that make the printing process more accessible and less daunting.

For instance, the carbon filter on the LD-002R was more of a placebo than an effective solution. The tiny fan did little more than blast resin-rich air into the room. By disabling this feature and sealing the air hole, we significantly improved the printing experience. This highlights the importance of small yet impactful design choices.

Selecting the Right Resin Printer

The variety of resin printers available today is overwhelming, and it's a testament to the growing popularity of this technology. DLP printers, with their unique micro-mirror setup, offer an intriguing alternative, especially with their small build space. However, the lack of a successor model and the roughness of the small build space put me off from making an impulsive purchase.

That's when Uniformation entered the picture, offering me the opportunity to test their GK3 Ultra SLA printer. With a price tag of around $1,300, it's clear that this printer is aimed at enthusiasts who know precisely what they want. The GK3 Ultra's predecessor, the GKtwo, had its fair share of troubles, but it also garnered a lot of interest. The GK3 has been in development for over a year, incorporating community and reviewer feedback, which is a refreshing approach compared to the 'take-it-or-leave-it' attitude of most 3D printer companies.

Setting Up the GK3 Ultra

Unboxing and setting up the GK3 Ultra was an experience in itself. Unlike the flatpack parcels of the past, modern CoreXY kinematics FDM printers arrive fully assembled, and the GK3 Ultra is no exception. Weighing in at a hefty 35 kg, it required some heavy lifting and furniture rollers to get it into position. The build volume is impressive, almost surpassing my Neptune 4, and the printer's depth is notable, especially with the resin dispenser system taking up a significant amount of space.

The setup process was relatively straightforward, involving the removal of protective films and running an exposure test to ensure everything was functioning correctly. The pre-leveled build plate was a welcome surprise, a massive improvement over the fiddling with bolts and sheets of paper I was used to with the LD-002R.

Printing with the GK3 Ultra

The resin feeding system of the GK3 Ultra is an interesting feature. It uses a special bottle style that fits into the printer's tubing and widgets, automatically handling the resin flow. While this design has its advantages, the limitation of only ten insertion/removal cycles for each bottle might be a concern for some. Fortunately, you can disable this feature and pour resin directly into the vat, which is likely what I'll opt for with typical resin bottles.

For my initial tests, I'll be using the provided ABS-like clear-blue resin, which offers a 'tough' kind of resin suitable for various use cases. I'll also be printing with water-washable resin, which is supposed to be less smelly and can be cleaned with plain water instead of IPA. These tests will include a range of items, from bottles to miniature figurines and LEGO Technic-compatible parts, to evaluate dimensional accuracy, durability, and overall workflow.
